EarthSave Chicago is busy all year round and always looking for volunteers to help out. Take it to the streets and see immediate responses, such as "THAT'S IT! I'M GIVING UP MEAT!" Or work behind the scenes on critical planning and design.
TABLING
We are working on a tabling event for October and will need volunteers for that, once the details are figured out. Any ideas for festivals are now welcome. Tabling is a great opportunity to interact with people looking for more information on going veg and getting people more involved with EarthSave Chicago and other local movements.
COW VAN
We collaborate with ADL (Animal Defense League-Chicago) on the COW van (Compassion on Wheels), which is out there on a weekly basis. The COW Van is a television-equipped van that roams the Chicago area, revealing the dark realities of how our society uses animals. Focusing primarily on showing undercover factory farming footage, the COW Van is able to bypass the media and bring these images directly to the people of Chicago. The video footage coming from the side of the COW Van is not always pleasant to look at, but the message of the COW project and the activists who discuss the footage with passers-by is an empowering one. Reactions to the COW Van vary. While some cannot bear to stop and look at the reality of animal food production, etc., many ordinary Chicagoans are struck by the images and inspired to consider moving toward more compassionate food choices. See the COW and read reports on previous outings. To get updates on when the COW goes out, subscribe to the email list by sending an empty email to CowVanChicago-subscribe@yahoogroups.com or check our calendar to see when it's going out next.
BODY SCREEN
If the COW is something you enjoy doing, you may also want to check out PA-USA's body screen. The Chicago nonprofit Protecting Animals, USA (PA-USA) was selected out of dozens of groups nationwide to receive one of PETA's (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) body screens. It's similar to the COW van, except it is a flat screen tv that a person can wear. Check out to see photos and email Danielle Marino if you're interested in wearing the screen or just leafleting next to it.
BEHIND-THE-SCENES: VEG CHICAGO, VEGGIE BIKE & DINE & CORE
If you don't want to take it to the streets, help with our behind the scenes projects. VegChicago publishes printed and online guides to dining out Veg Style in Chicago. We need experienced InDesign/Quark users and web publishers for regular updates. We also need volunteers to canvas restaurants and work with their managers for sustaining contributions and increasing vegetarian options. You may also help us behind the scenes planning events, such as the next Veggie Bike & Dine, coordinating, and fundraising.
